What we do

Where state support fails, we’re taking direct collective action to provide assistance for those without support during this time of crisis. Berlin Collective Action’s Nightlife Emergency Fund fund exists to give emergency aid to those most impacted by risk and violence in Berlin during COVID-19. Our financial aid and resource sharing is there to create breathing space for individuals so that they can take their next steps in this crisis.

WHO IS THE FUNDING FOR?

The fund aims to prioritise those most impacted by COVID-19. Due to the realities of systemic oppression, this generally means womxn, queer, trans and non-binary people, low-income gig workers, people with migratory backgrounds, BIPOC, sex workers, the immunocompromised, the disabled and those who are unsafe in quarantine. 100% of donations to this campaign are distributed to applicants in need by a diverse rotating committee.

WHY SHOULD I DONATE?

The redistribution of wealth is crucial to sustaining people during this crisis. If you have ever enjoyed Berlin’s nightlife, you’ll know that it’s the people that make it what it is. This is why our solidarity can never be limited exclusively to nightlife, but rather has to extend in a wider sense to those hit worst by the COVID-19 crisis. Some may never be able to access government aid due to legal status, language barriers or the violence of state institutions. With the widespread cancellation of events, closure of venues, and the general financial fallout of social distancing, many are in need of support. Those who are most in need right now are a crucial part of the vibrancy, labour and creativity that make up our communities. We urgently call on those who are financially secure to join us in supporting them and expressing our solidarity. In doing so, we share our support systems, inviting others under our umbrella of security as we all brace ourselves for this storm. Our job, for now, is to provide financial and bureaucratic assistance to those within our community who are struggling, whether it is providing money for food, or guidance on how to apply for government funds.

HOW ARE THE FUNDS PAID OUT?

We pay out funds on a weekly basis, subject to availability. We work with grassroots organisations to ensure those with no access to the internet or to a bank account are still able to receive assistance from us. If you face further extenuating circumstances that mean neither cash or bank transfer is an option, please note this in the form or reach out to us via email.

OTHER MEANS OF SUPPORT

The co-organisers of this initiative are also working to develop a database with useful and reliable resources and tools (local mutual aid initiatives, crisis hotlines, bureaucratic advice, etc.) for navigating the present crisis.
